Dental Implant Procedure

Placing dental implants is one of the more extensive procedures done in the field of cosmetic dentistry. While the entire process can take up to a year to complete, it can be done with minimal, if any, discomfort to the patient. We recommend implants to all of our patients who are suitable candidates. Implants provide the most durable, natural looking, and hassle-free treatment option for those with missing teeth.

The Process

• Preparation of the gum tissue and bone - We will first open up the gum tissue to expose the underlying bone. Sufficient jawbone tissue is necessary to support an implant. If the bone structure is insufficient, a bone graft may be necessary. If there is sufficient bone structure, then we can proceed to the next step.
• Installing the implant - A pilot hole is drilled into the bone that is used as a guide for the actual titanium implant screw. With this hole drilled into the appropriate spot, the titanium implant is then installed.
• Osseointegration - This part of the process accounts for most of the waiting involved and can take several months. The titanium implant and the bone need to bond together in order for the implant to be properly anchored in the jaw. This anchoring process is called "osseointegration".
• Placing the crown - Once osseointegration is successful, the post can be attached to the implant. This post is what the crown is attached to. Should your crown ever be damaged, it can be replaced without disturbing the implant itself.

While this process sounds painful, most of our implant patients report feeling only very mild discomfort. We use various anesthetics during the procedure, and can prescribe pain medication for the recovery process. Considering all of the aesthetic and functional advantages of implants, most of our patients agree that their implant procedure was well worth it.
