Relaxing the muscles

The first step in treatment is relaxing the muscles, stopping the spasms, and relieving your pain. We do this with an orthotic device. This is like an electrical massage. Once the muscles are relaxed, the pain will begin to subside, and we can start getting your bite back into alignment comfortably.

Learning new habits

In some patients, TMD can be resolved simply by relaxing the muscles and breaking the habits which cause the misalignment. This can include correcting dental problems which make chewing painful and therefore force you to adjust your bite to accommodate the pain.

It can also mean breaking habits such as nailing or pencil chewing.

Correcting your bite with a temporary appliance

In some cases, an orthotic appliance is needed to gradually move your bite back into the proper alignment.

Reshaping your teeth

It may be necessary to reshape your teeth in order to make the realignment permanent. This can be done in a number of ways. Often we use crowns or reshape your tooth enamel.
